Ode to the spacebar

Single-channel video piece, 3’28
16:9 / SD digital file / color / stereo

“ Playpausesong is a video piece, a musical system that exists only through a visual process. All spacebars around the world are sentenced together to the same music. It started in the 20th century and is still being played since. Each performer must execute the same gesture indefinitely, the frenetic gesture of media access and their mass consumption. “

Desktopsongs is a cycle of video pieces questioning our relationship with technology. Each work - inspired by desktop movie practice - is a musical system dependent on a visual process, tending towards an economy of the device. The cycle includes Screensong, questioning data privacy, Simonsong, questioning technological hegemony in the world of contemporary music, Playpausesong, questioning mass media consumption, Playersong, questioning the mediatization of weapons over the Internet, and Picklesong, questioning the idea of gesture in “expanded” music.

“ Each press of the spacebar - the unified keyboard key - triggers the same rythm and the same mechanical composition. It is an echo of the twentieth-century acceleration that has not died out but has become an omnipresent algorithm, pulsating in an endless cycle of pause and play. The performer has no choice - s/he repeats the gesture of access, entangled in the ritual of mass consuption, where the act of playing the content is also the gesture of its duplication. “
